Siena & Florence

Art and countryside in Tuscany...

The Italians call it 'passegiata' when families walk out in their finery, gelato in hand, to see and be seen. Become part of this colourful pageant with a walk through the streets of Siena or Florence early evening. Maybe grab an aperitivo in a street side cafe and watch the show unfold.
Tuscany was evidently at the front of the queue when things of beauty were handed out. The landscapes seem to have been plucked from a Renaissance painting and many art works still reside in the buildings for which they were created. The cobbled streets and flagstoned squares are those through which Dante, Piero della Francesca and the Medicis walked centuries ago. Splitting our time between Siena and Florence we enjoy an aesthetic feast.

Built on a starfish of hills, the old walled city of Siena is one of the most preserved medieval towns in Italy. Siena is compact with all the highlights within an easy stroll of the hotel. The striped Duomo is as distinctive as any in Tuscany and the Campo, home of the Palio horse race, perhaps the most impressive central square in Italy.

Outside the city walls the hills invite gentle country strolls. Florence was at the heart of the Renaissance and its leading lights have bequeathed some outstanding sights, today it's an unforgettable city and a haven of culture and artistic wealth. This small and immensely attractive city is easily explored on foot and its setting is no less beautiful. No book or television programme can prepare you for the first time you see Brunelleschi’s dome, Michelangelo’s David or Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. Visit too the morning markets, view Florence from the hills, sip Chianti, enjoy a bowl of ribollita… there’s something special at every turn.

We fly from London to Pisa and continue by private coach to our hotel in Siena. Hopefully we will have time for a brief introductory stroll around the city before dinner.

    Day 2 - Siena
We will spend the day in Siena. The Duomo and Campo are highlights but the back streets and less well known attractions will also be visited.

    Day 3 - Siena
Today we will get out for a stroll in the rolling Tuscany countryside. Siena is compact and the city is soon left behind.

    Day 4 - Siena
We could walk on the slopes of Monte Maggio or visit San Gimignano to walk amongst the vineyards that surround the town and give the best views of the famous towers.

    Day 5 - Siena
It is unlikely we will have seen all of Siena in a day so we might take this morning to finish off the sightseeing leaving the afternoon to enjoy more of the Tuscan countryside

    Day 6 - Florence
After breakfast we depart by public express coach to Florence. The service is quick and direct using comfortable vehicles with plenty of luggage space. We should arrive in time for lunch. Florence is one of the great art cities in the world and deserves two days of our time to get some understanding of its importance to the Renaissance.

    Day 7 - Florence
A visit to Fiesole in the hills above Florence is a good place to start. From here we can enjoy the classic view of the Florence skyline and also a walk through the local hills.

    Day 8 - Florence
Today we begin our exploration of Florence city. The local markets are fascinating and the architecture unrivalled. We will include visit to San Marco church, the Bargello, Palazzo Vecchio and the churches of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella.

    Day 9 - Florence
Today we will spend another day out walking in the Tuscan countryside. Florence is surrounded by hills so the options are many.

    Day 10 - Florence
We will spend our final day in Florence and include a visit to the Uffizi gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the world. Everybody will recognise some of the paintings in here.
