The English Lake District made easy…

The English Lakes are beautiful at any time of year. The majestic fells and tranquil waters have attracted lovers of magnificent scenery for more than two centuries with walkers and writers’ alike rejoicing in the unique vistas. Our week of leisurely half day walks and visits to cultural highlights captures both sides of the Lakes. There’s also time to stroll around Lakeland traditional villages and enjoy a cream tea, some locally made ice cream or a Cumbrian pint.

We visit sites associated with Wordsworth around Grasmere and Beatrix Potter above Windermere. We walk around Buttermere, beside Derwentwater, Rydal Water and Windermere. On other days we visit the delightful Borrowdale and Eskdale. We pay a visit to the fascinating Honister Slate Mines, ride the picturesque Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway (known locally as the La’al Ratty). We also visit the gardens of Muncaster Castle and take a ferry across Windermere. The drives to and from our day visits are beautiful in themselves.

The views from the lounge and bedrooms of Hassness Country House across the lake to Red Pike are some of the finest in England. There also is a terrace from where you can admire the views alongside the red squirrels and Herdwick sheep roam around the large informal garden. The relaxed atmosphere reminds us of holidays from a bygone age. Start the day with a leisurely full English breakfast, and then end it with a delicious dinner. This is a special holiday in a special place.

    Hassness Country House

Hassness Country House provides a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere for each and every guest. All our bedrooms have stunning views of the rugged and imposing hillsides across the water. Looking out across the lake on a still and sunny morning from your room is truly a special sight. At Hassness you’ll take a step back from the frantic world beyond the fells.  It’s far enough away yet convenient for the main tourist hubs of Keswick; this is a quieter, less trodden part of the Lake District with dramatic and tranquil scenery. Managers Carole & Brian will make you feel welcome. We know you’ll love it!

The lounge at Hassness is a delightful place to relax, with a large picture window looking out across the lake. Comfortable and welcoming, it’s a great place to enjoy your own company or that of your fellow guests.

Accommodation is in very comfortable twin, double and single rooms, all of which have lakeside views.

For 2017 the facilities are shared but plentiful - there are five modern high powered shower rooms, which cater for a full house of people comfortably. Toiletries are provided together with hairdryers. Towels (both hand & bath) are provided for each guest. Or you could always take a bracing pre-breakfast dip in the lake!

    2017 Room Supplements:
Sole Occupancy Supplement: £6 per night
Supplement for a Superior Twin Room: £5 per person per night

For the 2018 season, following an extensive refurbishment over the preceding winter, Hassness House will reopen with many rooms having been remodelled to include ensuite facilities. Accommodation for 2108 will be in twin, double and single occupancy rooms with seven twin or double rooms having ensuite facilities and the remainder sharing modern bathroom facilities with power showers.

Hassness House offers a retreat from today’s always connected world. There's no TV, no phones in the rooms, and no mobile reception in this sparsely populated valley of West Cumbria. If you do need to contact the outside world there is a payphone available. There’s no Wi-Fi in the bedrooms, but we do have a Wi-Fi router in the lounge, so if you can’t bear to be completely disconnected during your stay, you can fire up your iPad.

2018 Room Supplements (per person per night):
Double room with en suite facilities: £15
Superior twin with en suite facilities: £15

2018 Sole Occupancy Supplements (per night):
Single room with shared facilities: £6
Twin or Double room with shared facilities: £12
Superior Twin or Double room with en suite facilities: £35

Picnic lunches are included on days including a guided walk.

Free tea and coffee is available at all times to enjoy in the spacious and comfortable lounge overlooking the lake. Please also feel free to bring your own wine or beer as the guesthouse is not licensed. There's a guests' kitchen with a large guest fridge for storage.
