Kufsteinerland Winter Experience

Exploring the Austrian Tirol...

Come the New Year, when the cold weather arrives, the UK can be a dismal place. The post-Christmas blues kick in and we retreat to our homes like hibernating bears, but it doesn’t have to be so… Austria is quite another story altogether, and invites visitors by laying out an enticing white blanket of snow, and further extends this invitation to enjoy an array of exciting winter activities.

Our base for this winter adventure is in the charming village of Ebbs, surrounded by wild mountain landscapes and a short bus ride to the delightful town of Kufstein. This is the gateway to the Tirolean Alps, and serves as a spectacular backdrop. During our programme we’ll discover this winter paradise, in the best way possible by trekking through the snow or strapping on a pair of snowshoes to reach those more remote, untouched areas, and along the way we will enjoy some winter activities. And if the paths are not laden with snow the snowcapped peaks will certainly maintain the spectacular wintery ambiance. We will discover what is considered to be the most beautiful part of Austria, the Kaisertal Valley. If you have the energy, you will have the opportunity to climb up to the equally picturesque Ritzau Alm.

We will snowshoe to the famous spa town of Bad Häring, and end the day by taking a carriage ride, with Glühwein of course!, to a local distillery in Ebbs for a tour and to sample the local schnapps. Farm culture is prominent in this area, so we will take every opportunity to enjoy our lunch in some of the local Alms (farms), the perfect opportunity to taste the local produce and regional specialties.

A woodland walk will lead us to the delightful border town of Kufstein, the historic centre is most interesting, with cobblestones and narrow alleyways. We explore the fortress, built to control the entrance from the Alpine foothills into the Inn Valley, and the panoramic views are most impressive. Our visit to the fortress concludes with a recital on an organ played from the foot of the fortress, but with organ pipes located in one of the fortress towers, high above us.

    20 Jan 2018 - 27 Jan 2018

    Day 1 - Ebbs
We fly from the UK to Munich Airport. On arrival we travel by road to our hotel in the typical Tirolean village of Ebbs. If we have time on arrival then we will take an orientation tour of the village with our tour leader.

    Day 2 - Ebbs
Our programme is very flexible, allowing for our tour leader to organise the week to best suit local conditions, activity availability the group overall ability. Today we are likely to take a winter walk from Ebbs up into the Kaiserwald, in the foothills of the Zahmer Kaiser Mountains.

    Day 3 - Ebbs
Today we may visit Kufstein Fortress, the towns greatest landmark, proudly standing at 507m and linked to the city by a funicular railway. The fortress has been well utilised by many royals throughout history and used as a prison for a number of political dissidents during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The history is fascinating. During the afternoon we may take a bus up to Riedenberg, to be introduced to the art of snowshoeing, walking up to an ancient stone circle in the woods. Here we can learn about the mystical properties of burning various herbs.

    Day 4 - Ebbs
This morning we hope to have a tour of Ebbs beautiful church. And this afternoon a winter walk in the Kaisertal valley, chosen as the loveliest place in Austria in 2016. We hope to have lunch at a traditional Alm (farm).

    Day 5 - Ebbs
Today is a free day. There are lots of options for you to explore which your tour leader will inform you about. If you wish to further explore Kufstein, it is only a 10 minute bus ride away. Alternatively you can go further afield to Innsbruck, Munich or Salzburg.

    Day 6 - Ebbs
We may spend the good part of our day snowshoeing at Bad Häring. We can return to Ebbs in style, by way of a horse drawn carriage ride, with Gluwein to keep us warm. And end at a local distillery for a guided tour and tastings.

    Day 7 - Ebbs
We may walk in the woods above Kufstein, taking in the spectacular winter views from Duxer Kopfl, before climbing to the Berggasthof Hinterduxerhof for morning coffee and continue on to Duxer Alm (mountain farm) for lunch. This evening we will enjoy a traditional Tirolean evening at a nearby Alm.
