Islands in the Southern Mediterranean

Montalbano’s Sicily, Malta and, Gozo

The Mediterranean is the sea in the centre of the world or so the Ancient Romans and Greeks thought) and the islands of Sicily, Malta and Gozo are at the centre of the sea. Cultures that crossed the sea since the beginning of history have left a mark. Notably the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Normans, Arabs and Spanish. Each island is different yet to some extent moulded by the same forces of history.

We start in Ragusa in south eastern Sicily. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt as two towns, it is a unique place. The old town is a maze of cobbled hilly streets leading to beautiful squares, grand public buildings and cathedrals. It will be immediately familiar to aficionados of the Inspector Montalbano detective series. We explore the town and the area, enjoy the baroque delights of Noto and Modica, the prehistoric caves at Ispica and a little chocolate tasting on the way.

We take the ferry to Malta, fifty miles to the south of Sicily.  From our hotel on the north west of the island we can easily reach all the highlights, enjoy some pleasant walks and taste of the local olive oil, wine and cheese. Continuing the short distance to Gozo, a more rural and quiet island we finish our holiday with walks and nearly ever present sea views.
