From the Serengeti to Zanzibar

A journey through northern Tanzania.

Serengeti is Lion country. As the sun sets across the plains the roars can be heard loud and clear as local disputes are settled and precedence in the pride reconfirmed. From ‘Born Free’ to ‘The Lion King’, here the iconic plains are the source of inspiration for filmmaker, artist and author.

Our journey starts at the base of Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Africa’s highest mountain. From here we head west to Lake Manyara National Park, famous for water birds, flamingos, hippos and baboons. The magnificent Ngorongoro crater is a veritable Garden of Eden. We enjoy a safari at the crater floor amidst the densest collection of mammals on earth. Here hundreds of thousands of hoofs tread across the savannah, and this is the best place in the world to see rhinos in the wild up close.

Then on to the Serengeti where the variety of wildlife is overwhelming – lion, cheetah, giraffe, gnu, zebra, antelope – they are all here, and we have enough time to see them all – with any luck we’ll even spy a leopard. In the Tarangire National Park we go in search of its huge elephant herds, which can be found scratching the dry river bed for the underground streams.

The core of our walking will take place in the Usambara Mountains located in the north east of Tanzania. Here we walk between villages and to viewpoints over spectacular scenery, meeting friendly locals on the way.

We end our journey on the exotic spice island of Zanzibar, off the Tanzanian mainland. We spend one night in Stone Town and then move to the east coast for some seriously tropical R&R. In case white sand beaches, palm trees and swimming and snorkelling in turquoise waters don’t grab your imagination enough, we have arranged a spice tour of the island as well. This holiday is a wonderful combination of walking, safaris and relaxation. Pack your boots, your camera, your swimwear and enjoy!
