Dominica Adventure

A walk on the Caribbean wild side.

This is an island for adventure and you’ll be doing more than just getting off the beaten track! Untouched by mass tourism, with lush, dense rainforest that covers two thirds of the island, rugged mountains, rushing rivers, spectacular waterfalls, sulphur springs, natural rock pools and even a boiling lake, Dominica is a dramatic volcanic island of true natural and unspoiled beauty.

We’ll explore the whole of the island through a range of activities. We’ll follow sections of the Waitukubuli National Trail, the Caribbean’s first long distance path. Stretching from the north to the south of the island, the trail winds its way through villages, alongside rivers and waterfalls and opens up the best of the island. A challenging but thoroughly rewarding hike to Boiling Lake and the Valley of Desolation, swimming up the Titou Gorge, river tubing, a night walk to Middleham Falls and taking a zip line adventure through the tree tops are just some of the exciting and adventurous challenges Dominica has waiting for you.

There will be plenty of time to explore Roseau, the island’s capital, and to take a leisurely trip through a mangrove swamp as we explore the Indian River. Don’t forget to look out for the endemic Sisserou Parrot! We’ll spend a morning at sea whale watching, snorkelling at Soufrière Bay, relaxing in sulphur springs and swimming under waterfalls.

This is a holiday for the adventurous who want to experience a largely unknown Caribbean Island with some challenging hikes and exciting activities.

You love travel and dynamic experiences. You like to push yourself or experience something completely new because the rewards make it worth the effort. You enjoy discovering the wonders of the country, whilst at the same time finding out about yourself. Previous outdoor activity experience may be essential for some of these holidays. Some holidays may have a high degree of adventure but are not necessarily over energetic. These holidays involved a heightened sense of adventure for example on water or zip wire. Where walking is involved the climate might make walking more challenging and occasionally ascents may be up to 900m.

    05 Dec 2017 - 16 Dec 2017

    Day 1 - Portsmouth
Depart London for Antigua. On arrival connect directly to the our flight to nearby Dominica. On arrival we are met by coach and transferred to our first accommodation in Portsmouth, in the north west corner of the island. We stay in Portsmouth for three nights’ accommodation.

    Day 2 - Portsmouth
Dominica is home to the only long distance path in the Caribbean, the Waitukubuli National Trail. The path stretches from the south of the island to the north, covering a total of 115 miles. We walk segment 13 today, along the most northern route, from Penville to Capuchin. We take lunch at the house of the village icon and chicken farmer, Gilles Carbon and continue on foot, to Capuchin Bay where we board fishing vessels for a boat trip to Prince Rupert Bay. As we sail, the fisherman share their stories of life on the island. There will be time for swimming before we return to our hotel.

    Day 3 - Portsmouth
Formidably known as the most challenging hike on the island, not to mention the highest peak in Dominica, the wild hike to the top of Morne Diablotin (1447m) is our objective today. It requires stamina and balance, agility as well as fitness. Starting in the tranquil Syndicate nature reserve, where parrots can sometimes be seen, we walk past huge trees to begin, but the flora gets much smaller as we ascend. Towards the top, there will be some scrambling through the trees before we reach the summit. On a good, clear day the views will be well worth the hike. Tonight’s dinner will be well deserved!

    Day 4 - Wotten Waven
Another day and time for another adventure! Today we leave Portsmouth and head for the rainforest where we enjoy zip lining and canopy trails through the trees. The jungle view is incredible! Our afternoon is more relaxed, but equally enjoyable as we glide down crystal clear rapids river tubing. We end the day at our homely guest house, located in the lush Roseau Valley village of Wotten Waven. We stay here for two night’s accommodation.

    Day 5 - Wotten Waven
Segment 3 of the Waitukubuli Trail is almost on our doorstep and we’ll hike from Bellevue Chopin to Wotten Waven with the opportunity of enjoying the therapeutic sulphur springs en route.

    Day 6 - Roseau
Another of the more challenging but also most definitely rewarding walks of the holiday lies ahead of us today through the Valley of Desolation to Boiling Lake. It’s the second largest lake of its kind in the world and is fascinating to experience. At the end of our hike, we’ll take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the Titou Gorge. We finish our day in the Island’s capital of Roseau for three nights’ accommodation.

    Day 7 - Roseau
From Roseau’s harbour front, we take to the sea for a morning whale watching. The island’s sheer underwater drop-offs create deep sheltered bays along its western coastline and are the feeding grounds for six different species of whales. The mighty Sperm Whale resides in Dominican waters all year long and is especially active from November-March. This afternoon, there will optional snorkeling in Soufriere Bay.

    Day 8 - Roseau
Exploring Roseau through a series of clues and riddles is an exciting way to discover the history and tradition of the capital of the island. Interact with the locals, discover botanical gardens and take plenty of photos! The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore some more or perhaps enjoy a swim at the hotel pool. This evening we head out to Middleham Falls for an evening walk as dusk settles, lighting torches as night falls.

    Day 9 - Rosalie Bay
Today we pack our cases and send them off to the east coast on the Atlantic Ocean, while we enjoy our day’s hike. We head up high to the watershed in Morne Trois National Park. From here we cross the watershed via Freshwater Lake and walk the Chemin L’Etang old route down through the wild forest to the village of Grand Ford. We hope to find a cold beer here before we continue to our hotel. We end the day at the Rosalie Bay Resort, an eco-boutique and wellness resort inspired by nature, where we stay for two nights’ accommodation.

    Day 10 - Rosalie Bay
An adventurous morning, we hike up to see the stunning Sari Sari Falls. A short but fairly challenging walk, as half the walk is in the river itself, we’ll negotiate rocks, pools, boulders and a jungle. An afternoon coastal walk finishes close to our hotel, visiting a local Bay Leaf distillery en route.

    Day 11 - In Flight
A morning at leisure allows us to really appreciate this beautiful resort by relaxing at the salt water pool, or perhaps enjoy a treatment in the spa. After lunch we transfer to the airport for our flight to Antigua and the connection to London.

    Day 12 - -
    Arrive London
