Classical Andalucia

A journey to Seville, Córdoba and Granada

Follow the threads of a rich tapestry of civilisation as you visit three sparkling jewels in the Andalucian crown. Seville, Cordoba and Granada simply pulse with history and you’ll feel the beating heart of each city as you stroll through the streets.

Situated on the banks of the river Guadalquivir, and once the capital of Andalucia, it is in Seville that we begin our exploration of Spain’s architectural magnificence. Only in 1031 did Seville become the capital of the south having been overshadowed by Cordoba until the collapse of the Cordoba Caliphate. Seville has many fine buildings, amongst them the cathedral, reputedly the largest Gothic church in the world. Its sheer magnitude alone demands attention, as does the splendour of its wood carved altarpiece and the Alcázar, originally built as a palace for Seville’s Muslim rulers. We stay in Seville for five nights with the opportunity to take local transport out of the city. The rolling Sierra Morena to the north of Seville has no great mountains but offers attractive and remote easy walking country.

Cordoba was once the biggest city in Western Europe during the 10th century. It had a booming agricultural economy, as well as leather and metal work and was a place where Christians, Muslims and Jews lived in harmony. There are many splendid reminders of this era: fascinating old buildings, beautiful patios and the famous Mezquita around which Cordoba centres itself. The Mezquita, one of the most beautiful Mosques, was originally founded in 785 and over the centuries was enlarged to cater for Cordoba’s expanding population, finally being converted to a Catholic cathedral in 1523. We will have time to visit the Mezquita and explore the Jewish and Muslim quarters of the town. Cordoba’s surrounding countryside is dotted with monuments to its Moorish past. We will take time to explore and walk in this interesting area.

Granada was considered the finest city in Iberia during Moorish rule. Here there are narrow streets, beautiful cathedrals and churches and of course, the Alhambra, a palace fortress originally of the Nasrid Sultans. The Alhambra is made up of three groups of buildings, the Alcazaba, the Casa Real (Royal Palace) and the Generalife (the gardens, patios & walkways) and displays exquisite Moorish art, bringing the palace to life with its sheer brilliance. Here we have time to visit the Alhambra, the Royal Palace, the gardens of the Generalife, the cathedral and of course, the old city itself.
