Classic South America

Brazil to Argentina: Fantastic wildlife and tropical beaches plus the iconic cities of Rio and Buenos Aires.

From the beautiful people on the Copacabana beach and the beautiful views from Christ the Redeemer, the grandeur of the Iguazu River plunging over the falls and the heady tango nights of Buenos Aires, these are just a few dimensions of classic South America.

We start in Rio, ‘Cidade Marvilhosa’, the ‘marvellous city’, one of the most photogenic places in the world. We have plenty of time to take in the views and sample the atmosphere. We will view the city from the statue of Christ and also from Sugarloaf Mountain, views familiar to anybody who watched the 2016 Olympics. Leaving Rio we travel down the coast and then take a boat out to Ilha Grande, a tropical paradise of sandy beaches and car-free relaxed towns. We follow lush, steamy forest trails to unspoiled beaches. The paths are good and the beaches beautiful. Parati, a boom town built on the back of the gold trade, is a gem of colonial architecture. Its streets are ideal to wander and the islands covering the bay off shore make a great backdrop.

The Iguazu Falls (Foz de Iguacu in Portuguese) where the Iguazu River drops over the most impressive waterfalls on the planet must surely be the highlight of this magical trip. Next we travel to the jungle and Yacutinga Lodge to enjoy the flora and fauna and finally to Buenos Aires, the home of tango and asado, the Casa Rosada and Eva Peron. Its wide open spaces are a huge contrast to the more compact Rio. A tango show completes our holiday in fine style.

    03 Nov 2017 - 18 Nov 2017

Day 1 - Rio de Janeiro
Depart London Heathrow with British Airways on the day flight to Rio de Janeiro. We arrive in Rio late and hence we do not include dinner on the first night. It is assumed you will be tired and want to go to bed.

Day 2 - Rio de Janeiro
Rio is an iconic city. We will visit Christ the Redeemer at Corcovado and take the Cable Car to the top of the Sugar Loaf Mountain. This are two of the more immediately familiar city sights to be seen anywhere in the world.

    Day 3 - Ilha Grande
We drive out along the dramatic coastline and take the short (about 1 hour) boat trip to Ilha Grande and our hotel on the peaceful island at Vila Abraao. There are no cars here and life is as relaxed as anywhere in Brazil. We should have time to enjoy a short walk after dropping our bags at the hotel.

    Day 4 - Ilha Grande
We will walk on some of the many paths that join the beaches and the high points on the island. Nothing gets done in a hurry here and we will fit in with this. We swim from one of Brazil´s most beautiful beaches before walking back. For those that prefer a boat trip back can be arranged at your own expense.

    Day 6 - Parati
We catch the ferry back to the mainland and savour a fine scenic drive along the superb Costa Verde on to Parati. We should arrive early afternoon with time for a walk around this beautiful historic town.

    Day 7 - Parati
Today we might visit the beaches for a last chance to walk the coastline and swim before we travel inland.

    Day 8 - Puerto Iguazu
We will take a morning’s transfer to Sao Paolo where we catch the flight to our next destination, one of the greatest natural wonders of the Americas, Iguazu Falls (2 nights) straddling the Brazilian-Argentine border. We stay on the Argentinean side of the border but have plenty of chance to see the falls from both the Brazilian and Argentinean sides during our stay.

    Day 10 - Yacutinga Lodge
We drive the 80km’s out into the rainforest to get to the Lodge.

    Day 11 - Yacutinga Lodge
You will have time to explore the jungle on foot and by canoe in the company of professional guides to help explain the ecology, diversity, beauty and fragility of the jungle during our time here.

    Day 12 - Buenos Aires
We drive back to Puerto Iguazu to catch the flight to Buenos Aires arriving late afternoon.

    Day 13 - Buenos Aires
A free day. Using the local commuter train we may join the Porteños at the delightful inland estuary of El Tigre, where we can enjoy a boat trip and have time for a relaxed lunch before visiting the converted fruit market, now a bustling craft fair. It may also be possible to visit the attractive town of Colonia across the Rio de la Plata in Uruguay, at your own expense. If you are considering the trip to Colonia please discuss this with your tour leader.

    Day 14 - Buenos Aires
A full day in Buenos Aires for sightseeing, catching up on some last minute shopping or just to experience the city. A comprehensive guided tour will be offered in the morning. Tonight we also take in an evening Tango Show.

    Day 15 - In flight
Free time before transferring to the international airport for our flight back to the UK.

    Day 16 -
We arrive back in the UK.
