The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said ‘A journey of a
thousand miles must begin with a single step’ and this is certainly a
journey to remember. As you immerse yourself in Chinese culture
and history you’ll create lasting memories every step of your way.
Nothing beats standing on the Great Wall of China in the early
morning mist or gazing in wonder at the Terracotta Warriors, where
no two faces of the 8000 strong army are the same. Contemplate
the vastness of the Forbidden City and the beauty of the landscape
as you walk the sea of clouds in the Huangshan Mountains.
We fly from London to Beijing and then take a local flight to
Xian, home of the terracotta troops. We’ll have a full day sightseeing
in Xian and enjoy a traditional Tang Dynasty performance in the
evening. Next it’s onto the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai where
we’ll explore the Jade Buddha Temple, Yu Yuan Garden, the
fascinating Museum of Shanghai and take a stroll along the Bund.
We travel by train to Suzhou, known as the Venice of the East
and famous for its beautiful gardens and silk production. We have a day sightseeing and then travel by train to Hangzhou. We have three
full days here that allow us to explore on foot the many areas of
interest including Jade Springs and the Lingyin Temple and Dragon
Well (with reportedly the purest water in China). We’ll also take a
boat trip to West Lake as well as visiting a botanical garden.
Then it’s by road to the Huangshan Mountains, giving us an
opportunity to enjoy a totally different environment. We have two
days of walking in this beautiful region before flying to Beijing where
we will visit all the main sites including the Forbidden City, the
Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, The Great Hall of the People
and Tian’anmen Square. We’ll also spend a full day visiting the Great
Wall of China and the Ming Tombs.
