Caribbean Island Hopping: St Lucia, Martinique, Dominica & Antigua

Conjure up images of azure seas, white sand beaches, palm trees stirred by gentle breezes, abundant mango trees and banana palms and you’ll imagine only the beginning of what the these islands have to offer. Exploring the Caribbean on this holiday brings with it a real sense of freedom as you visit several islands experiencing their own distinct flavours, rhythm and culture.

We begin on the verdant island of St Lucia, which is quite simply a beautiful island. Coastal walks, botanical gardens and exotic beaches are all waiting to be discovered. The island is a fusion of French, British and African traditions - an intriguing mix!

Taking a short ferry ride, we head to the French-Caribbean island of Martinique, where Napoleon’s Empress Josephine was born. We’ll see historic Fort de France, enjoy a walk that takes us from the Atlantic to the Caribbean coast, through a rainforest, and of course have time for a swim from one of the beautiful beaches.

On to Dominica, a spectacular wild, green island of rugged mountains, lush rainforests and rushing rivers, and sparkling waterfalls. Relatively untouched by tourism, the island offers a wide variety of hikes, some following routes developed by the Kalinago (Carib) population, long before Columbus arrived. Relax in a sulphur spa and enjoy a boat trip. This is certainly an island for nature lovers.

During our time on Antigua, we’ll take a rainforest hike, explore the capital of St John’s, and perhaps swim at one of Antigua’s famed 365 beaches – one for every day of the year!

Please note: that we use local scheduled ferry services between islands and it may be necessary to change the itinerary should the schedules alter.

Day 1 - Bay Gardens Inn, St Lucia
Arrive at St Lucia’s Hewanorra airport, and transfer by road to Rodney Bay on the north of the island, to the Bay Gardens Inn, our home for the next three nights.

Day 2 - Bay Gardens Inn, St Lucia
Our walk visits the village of Gros Islet and follows the coastline around Rodney Bay to Pigeon Island with views of the south of Martinique. We return by water taxi across the Bay.

Day 3 - Bay Gardens Inn, St Lucia
Our Plantation walk today takes us along the old Brigend Trail that was used during the French and English battle at Praslin. As we explore deeper into the forest, we should listen out for some of the endemic birds of the island. Our day ends at Mamiku Botanical Gardens with a short visit and perhaps a well deserved ice cream!

Day 4 - La Pagerie, Martinique
Taking the ferry from Castries today, we make the crossing to Fort de France (approx 1.5hrs), on the nearby French island of Martinique. We’ll view the Old Fort and Cathedral of the capital en route to the hamlet of Trois Ilets where we stay at the Hotel La Pagerie for four nights.

Day 5 - La Pagerie, Martinique
Taking the ferry across the bay to Fort de France, we meet our coach to take us to the start of the River and Rainforest walk, which ends with a picnic lunch and is followed by a visit to the Balata Botanical Gardens. We return to the hotel by coach. Dinner is at the hotel.

Day 6 - La Pagerie, Martinique
Our coastal walk today takes us from the hamlet of St Anne’s, through mangroves, along unspoilt beaches and follows the Caribbean coastline. There will be time for a relaxing swim at a beach where we stop for our picnic lunch.

Day 7 - La Pagerie, Martinique
After exploring two Caribbean islands, you have a day to yourselves to recharge. The hotel has a lovely pool to relax by, or perhaps the beach beckons. Fort de France is a short ferry ride away and the hamlet Trois Ilets offers some souvenir shopping. You may even wish to take one of the many optional local excursions or visit the Musee de la Pagerie, birthplace of future empress Josephine

Day 8 - Fort Young Hotel, Dominica
With an early start today, we leave Martinique behind and take the ferry to the island of Dominica (approx 2hrs), where we stay in Roseau at the Fort Young Hotel for 4 nights. We’ll head into the Roseau Valley for lunch and panoramic views, returning to the hotel by mid afternoon.

Day 9 - Fort Young Hotel, Dominica
We transfer by coach to Soufrière, where we walk part of the island’s Waitakabuli Trail, before returning to visit the town’s church and relaxing the muscles in the sea’s warm sulphur bath. We’ll have a picnic lunch before returning to the hotel. For those that want, there is the opportunity for optional snorkelling. Tonight, we’ll sample a true Caribbean culinary experience, where we’ll watch a demonstration, enjoy the dishes and there is also some rum tasting!

Day 10 - Fort Young Hotel, Dominica
An interesting coastal walk takes us through indigenous communities and finishes with a visit of the Kalingo Barana Auté village, where we can experience the authentic heritage of the last remaining Kalinago people of the Caribbean.

Day 11 - Fort Young Hotel, Dominica
From Penville, in the north west of the island, we take a linear walk finishing with lunch at the house of the village icon and chicken farmer, Gilles Carbon. We continue with a short transfer, possibly on foot, to Capuchin village where we board fishing vessels for a boat trip to Prince Rupert Bay, with the fisherman sharing their stories of life on the island.

Day 12 - Tradewinds Hotel, Antigua
A leisurely morning allows for a visit to the wonderful waterfall grotto of the Emerald Pool, where a short hike takes us through lush vegetation of the Trois Pitons National Park, the first park in the Caribbean designated a UNESCO heritage site, to a shimmering pool in the forest. Later, we’ll continue to the airport, where we take our flight to St John’s Antigua. Here we stay at the comfortable Tradewinds Hotel for two nights.

Day 13 - Tradewinds Hotel, Antigua
We take a rainforest walk this morning, seeing historical Walling’s Dam en route, before we reach Signal Hill, which offers magnificent 360° views of the island, including the first beach that Columbus landed on and Carlie Bay, one of Antigua’s largest pineapple farms. This afternoon you will have time to relax at the hotel or perhaps visit the nearby beach.

    Day 14 - -
Our last day in the Caribbean, we’ll have a leisurely morning, perhaps enjoying a last swim, and the opportunity to visit St John’s, the island’s capital. The city is dominated by the evocative white baroque towers of St John’s cathedral and our visit offers a chance to pick up some last minute souvenirs, enjoy lunch or perhaps visit the charming Antigua and Barbuda museum. We transfer to the airport in the late afternoon, for our overnight flight to London Gatwick
