Azores Wildlife Experience

The untamed Hawaii of the Atlantic

Around every corner, there is another breathtaking experience to be had. Walk along the rim of ancient volcanoes and peer down into their immense craters or bask in the serenity of silence on one of the many beautiful beaches. The land you walk on is covered in a blanket of green, evoking a sense of lost paradise and an escape to a different world.

The nine islands of the Azores are a nature lover’s paradise, from the calm lakes and lagoons to the soaring shards of rock that tower above the land. Situated in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean, between the coast of Portugal and America, all of the islands have volcanic origin, except Santa Maria, and offer a vast array of nature’s wonders, that can only be described as heaven on earth.

The economy of the islands is still predominantly based on agriculture and fishing which provides a rustic, self-sufficient atmosphere in each destination – very traditional and rare in modern day life but refreshing to see. As the only European country to produce tea, the warm climate and mineral rich soil makes for a unique environment where tropical fruits are also grown in abundance, like tangy pineapples and juicy passion fruits.

Walk through the beautiful vineyards of the islands and visit the Wine Museum in Gruta das Torres. The Laurisliva forest is a natural haven and provides some excellent walks led by your experienced leader. Venture away from the more desolate areas and explore the city, with a visit to the Whalers Museum and enjoy delicious traditional meals at the restaurant of Whalecome ao Pico on most of the nights.

Walk through the volcanic landscape and enjoy one of the highlights of the trip – whale watching. These majestic creatures can be spotted bursting through the crests of shimmering waves, along with schools of dolphins gliding along the horizon. Don’t forget to look out for some of the rare bird species that decorate the treetops and the skies of the islands as they create an unforgettable sound track to your holiday of a lifetime.
