Autumn in the Peloponnese

The History and Culture of the Mani...

The late morning sun casts a shadow over the ancient remains of the Acropolis, once the tallest in the Spartan hills. Close your eyes and listen to the magical silence of what was once a powerful Greek city for over 400 years.

Our journey through the history and culture of the Mani Peninsula, on Greece’s mainland region of the Peloponnese, takes us south from the pretty coastal village of Gerolimenas with its iconic tower-houses, to Ancient Sparta, where a guided visit helps unfold the history of the area. Best known for its powerful army, archaeological remains show that Sparta also produced beautiful ivory and bronze artefacts and was also a place where poetry flourished. A boat ride into the Caves of Diros, with its spectacular stalagmites and stalactites, is a highlight. Once a bustling and cosmopolitan port city, Ancient Corinth has a wealth of treasures, discovered from the town, in its remarkable museum.
Interspersed with the history of the Mani, our walks take us through the quiet countryside dotted with small hamlets and villages, and along coastal paths which may end with an afternoon swim or stroll on a secluded beach. We’ll experience traditional Greek life with a visit to an olive farm, see cheese making, and enjoy tasting at a winery. This is the real essence of Greece.

Local cuisine is a highlight of any trip to Greece and tavernas provide the setting for our dinner each evening, with ample opportunity to enjoy different dishes and the local wines.
