An African Journey

Through Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa.

The waterhole is the place. All is equal here. Hunter and hunted, bird or mammal, herbivore or carnivore. They all must drink so all must come. So sit quietly and let them approach. This is the Africa of David Attenborough and countless TV shows. And yet here it is, just in front of you.

Travel in a comfortable and robust overland truck and start this incredible adventure in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where we enjoy a guided tour of the magnificent Fall and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. Across the Zambezi we enter Botswana to spend the afternoon on a sunset cruise, game viewing in the unspoilt wilderness of Chobe National Park.

The next day begins with a game drive in Chobe before crossing into Namibia. We drive through the Caprivi to our lodge on the banks of the Kwando River.

Heading back into Botswana and onto the Okavango Delta, we spend a day exploring the water pathways by speedboat and mokoros (traditional dugout canoes). We take a thrilling bush walk to spot elephants, waterbuck and other animals in this watery paradise. Returning to Namibia we make our way along the Caprivi to Rundu on the banks of the Kavango River, overlooking Angola. From here it’s on to Etosha National Park for two days filled with game drives, in search of the big five as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra and the numerous types of antelope the park has to offer. (We cannot always guarantee accommodation inside the Park.)

Moving on, we head for Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain. We visit the Bushman paintings at Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest, where the trees are estimated to be 250 million years old.

We then head for the coast to Swakopmund, following the Skeleton Coast and visiting Africa’s largest seal colony. Still heading south we visit the Namib Naukluft National Park and overnight at Maltahohe (Sesriem) before setting off early the next day to visit the world’s highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei. A wonder to behold, these dunes can reach a height of 300m.

Next we head off for Fish River Canyon, a chasm 100 miles long and up to 17 miles wide. We have time to explore before moving onto Orange River which forms the South African-Namibian boundary.

Saying ‘hello’ to South Africa, we make our way along the coast through the Namaqualand region and Clanwilliam area for one night before completing our journey in Cape Town. Cape Town is one of the world’s most beautiful and diverse cities. With three days here we include a full day Cape Peninsula tour, a chance to really stretch our legs and climb Table Mountain (weather permitting), and a trip to the famous winelands area. We sample their glorious goods and make a toast to an unforgettable journey.

Please note: This is a pioneer holiday and the itinerary and other arrangements may be subject to change at short notice. To enable us to include so many highlights in one trip, the distances travelled during this journey will be vast. Some days will mainly be travel days, but we will make sure that we stop regularly to see the sights and stretch our legs along the way.

At Chapters Experience Holidays, we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to peoples’ lives. By travelling with us on this holiday, you can directly help us support the destinations we visit through our staff-managed charitable project click Heart & Sole
